Progetto-Snaps - snapshots all sets are missing?
« on: 21 January 2019, 12:04 »

I have downloaded the 0.205 Full-Set and the pS_Snap_20190120_(cm).dat

First confusing thing is that all the tuts say it needs to be one zip file put the download has snap_1.7z and snap_2.7z.
Do i need to unpack them and then make a zip?

The problem is that if i make a zip that i miss 177 sets and 35046 ROMs.
If i unpack all png's in one folder i get the message that the rompath is empty.

Most likely your setup is incorrect.

Keep in mind the officially supported storing methods:

rompath\setname\file 1 ... file n for decompressed sets
rompath\setname.zip (or .rar/.7z) where the archive contains the singe files for the specific set.

Now progetto snaps/flyers/etc are usually organized in 1 set holding all pngs in it.....

So let's take for example a decompressed progretto flyers collection. The setname in the flyers dat is: tadaaa "flyers"
So...your rompath must a parent of it, for example: F:\MAME\Progetto\progetto-SNAPS - Flyers

So you got a full file structure like:
F:\MAME\Progetto\progetto-SNAPS - Flyers\flyers\pacman.png

For compressed sets you have
F:\MAME\Progetto\progetto-SNAPS - Flyers\flyers.zip (.rar/.7z)

For progetto snaps it's recommended to turn off scanner's fix-missing option by the way...otherwise it can take very very long for some scan/fix runs.

I did now download the titles and there are also two files (titles_1.7z, titles_2.7z)?

My path is: "R:\MAME\Extras\snap\snap.zip"
And rompath in clrmamepro is: "R:\MAME\Extras\snap\"

Well, the progetto archives are split up into various packages...you need to combine them...

The (non softwarelist) titles (snapshot) datfile holds one set "snap"

So again you end with:

F:\MAME\Progetto\progetto-SNAPS - Snap\snap\pacman.png (and so on for decompressed sets)

F:\MAME\Progetto\progetto-SNAPS - Snap is the rompath
snap is the set name which holds the single files

for compressed you need
rompath\setname.zip or rompath\setname.7z or rompath\setname.rar
so using the upper example
F:\MAME\Progetto\progetto-SNAPS - Snap\snap.zip where the zip holds the single pngs...

I don't get it.

First thing to clarify is:
What do to with the snap_1.7z and snap_2.7z or titles_1.7z and titles_2.7z
I HAVE TO extract them because MAME does not recognize snap_1.7z and snap_2.7z if i put this two files in the snap directory.
I also can build a zip from all this extracted png's and that zip works in MAME.
But validating that zip with clrmamepro and pS_Snap_20190120_(cm).dat does not work (missing almost everything)?
Validating against a folder where i have snap_1.7z and snap_2.7z does not work (The following not empty rompaths don't contain any valid set)

Why do i need to combine them?
Maybe i only want Snapshots and Titles and don't care for Bosses and Ends.

You're absolutely right that MAME doesn't support e.g. snap_1.7z, _2.7z and so on.
As I said, progetto snaps do not provide ONE archive for let's say flyers/whatever. The page usually provides multiple ones....several 7z archives...sometimes one older version plus several update archives...or a recent version split up in several 7z files.
To use them, you need to combine them. So either unpack all 7z files and repack them in one giant 7z or keep them unpacked.

For validating you have to follow the correct storing method which was described earlier

A) rompath\setname\file 1 ... file n for decompressed sets
B) rompath\setname.zip (or .rar/.7z) where the archive contains the singe files for the specific set.

So let's assume you've downloaded snap_1.7z etc and unpacked it to a folder, you need to be sure that the folder is named "snap" since this matched the setname in progetto's datfile. And as we know, sets are stored in rompaths, so your rompath needs to be the parent of it.

If you repacked the single pngs to a new zip (actually, standard zip is < 4 GB), ensure that you did not include any sub paths. So the archive needs to hold the png without any folder.
Then again, your rompath needs to be set to the folder holding snap.zip.

All you need to do is follow the A) B) rules above and understand what your rompath is

what do you mean with "MESS" stuff...MESS merged with MAME years ago... and progetto archives and dats are correct.....or you scan a software list datfile ('SL') while you did not download the belonging packages at all (http://www.progettosnaps.net/softwareresources/)

If i download a set here:
http://www.progettosnaps.net/snapshots/

and every set has a dat then i assume the dat fits the set.
There is no hint that you need to download other stuff to the sets to make the dat fit.

It depends which datfile you're using. The page provides some datfiles with and without software list pngs....and the software list ones are stored on the link I've posted previously.

For example pS Snap 20190120 and pS Snap NS 20190120

How do you know which dats need software png's?
Nothing on that page is telling me that.

And that doesn't make sense that there is a arcade dat that you can build a romset without the software (MESS) stuff but then you need to download the software snaps, titles, covers...

Also i don't get why every snapshot set has it's own dat above it when it does not fit and then on that software list resources page there are again dats for each set.
Also on that page the snaps are called "ingames" and not snaps?

Seems like a mess to me and i can't wrap my head around that.

EDIT:
Damn i need pS_Snap_NS and it's here:
http://www.progettosnaps.net/dats/

This should be the one above the sets on the snapshot page.

Well...why don't you contact the owner of the progetto page and raise your complaints there?

To me the page holds enough information to know what to do....Each single pages say if it is software list related or not...

and by the way "MESS" is dead since 4 years...so there is only MAME plus software lists
