cmpro no longer viable for me
« on: 09 June 2019, 03:27 »

Used 4.034 up until MAME 2.09.

Then tonight decided to update to 4.035, then saw there was a "nightly build" version available, so I downloaded and installed that (05152019).

Then updated my MAME executable to 2.10 using the "arcade" flavor (mamearcadeui64).

Loaded up the profile with the 100% 2.09 scan, and proceeded to start a scan with 2.10.

At least 15 MINUTES later, and it is STILL "Receiving data".  It NEVER took this long before!  I don't know exactly how long it did take as I walked away from my PC for a time.

Then, while in the middle of the scan, my paid Malwarebytes dutifully reported that it blocked cmpro64.exe as "ransomware".  What??  It then decided to "block" the program from running, or even be able to be deleted.

So, I created an exception, made a copy of the cmpro folder, renamed the old folder to "cmpro old", and renamed the new folder back to "cmpro", and re-started a scan.

Again, it was 15 minutes before it started any activity.

But, my main concern was that Malwarebytes saw it as ransomware.  I've been using this program for years without an issue before today, so I thought I'd report it here in case anyone else has run into the same issue.

Regarding the "malware" topic. It's simply a false positive report of your virusscanner. Such things are pretty common and usually resolve automatically with the next update of the virusdefinitions. So nothing to worry about. For example Windows Defender took ages on my system when it tries to scan the official packed mame binaries/sources at the time when it came out last week. One day later all was fine.

Regarding the receive data topic:
cmpro runs the mame binary with -listxml parameter and redirects the output. After about 20 seconds (depending a bit on your system speed) you should see the actual sets being imported (dialog shows changing text output). If not, the MAME binary got a problem to create the listxml output file.

This can also be related to your virusscanner which may also have problems when it accesses the mame binary and blocks it.

So...either turn off your scanner for the MAME binary and cmpro binary or wait till your paid malwarebytes gets an update.

https://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/

Correct, I've never downloaded it from anywhere else.

@Roman, I found it a bit...unusual...that Malwarebytes did that, but even more so when cmpro took ages to start it's import.

Next MAME update, I'll add an exception for the binary to see if that might help with the cmpro import time.

false positives are nothing unusual but daily business.....there were even cases where Microsoft's own scanner marked Windows exe files and nothing worked anymore (at least till the next definitions update).......so to sum it up: virusscanners are a pain....
