Newbie needs help (be nice)
« on: 14 July 2011, 11:26 »

Hi folks. How are we all doing? I am hoping somebody can give me some guidance on how to use clrmamepro properly to update my roms? I have MAME version 0.140 complete (as far as I know) without icons and artwork and samples I think but I do have the roms and CHD'S) I have always struggled to figure out how to update my collecton properly because the tutorials on the website are a bit sketchy to say the least.

1) Profiler -> Create, let it point to your MAME binary and let it create a default profiler
2) Settings -> Setup rompaths (and maybe sample paths if you use them)
3) Scanner -> hit scan and see the results in the tree

well...3 can be more of course....if you're sure you got merged sets instead of split merged sets, you may want to change the merge mode first but generally the selected default values should be fine for you. The scan will show the issues with your sets. If you want to fix them, you simply can enable the fix options and scan again. What can be fixed will be fixed then....but of course it can't magically create missing files for you.....which brings us to the next topic 'updating'...

So, the common way to update is to replace the MAME binary and if you then load the profile in cmpro's profiler, it sees that the underlying mame exe has changed and rebuilds the rom naming database. After that you go to the scanner and do a full scan with all check/fix options enabled...this should fix all possible issues but again, you will end with missing files, the ones which were newly added to the new MAME version.

Adding new files can be achieved in 2 ways:

1) Settings -> Define Addpaths and store your newly collected files in there, Scanner->Enable fix missing and rescan.
2) (recommended) Rebuilder -> let the rebuilder destination point to your old collection, rebuilder source points to the files you want to add. That can also be achieved by drag'n drop new files in the scanner tree window. The rebuilder 'adds' anything valid it finds in the source to the destination....no matter what the sourcefiles are named. After a rebuild, rescan.

I have the update DVD'S from 0.141 onwards. Do I need the current clrmame pro for that speficic version? Also do I just place my update CHD'S in the same update folder?

CHD won't be added via rebuilder, for easiness, simply copy them into a rompath root folder. The scanner will detect them if they are wrongly placed and moves them to a correct place.

You only need the latest cmpro and a MAME version you want to update to.

what is *that*?
chd wont be rebuilt, so you have to manually add them... easiest by simply copying the chd files into a rompath root folder. the scanner can move them to their correct place then.

I;m putting in my 0.140 before I work with my updates to give it a go. I have encountered 1 more problem though..............the clrmamepro dat files don't seem to have updated themselves since 0.142. Is that going to be a problem to me or do I just work as normal with them?

It seems somehow your post became 2 ?
Anyway,
I replied to you here :)
http://www.emulab.it/forum/index.php?topic=519.msg1677#new

That should make it easy, it includes dats.

I would rather Roman not reply,
if he has a spare minute, I would rather he completes the new version..
*hint*  *hint*
As I am one of those that would get the most from a new version such as he is working on.
Roman, if you want any help testing I have just the system to help test..
Cheers

Now get rebuilding John
;)

well, regarding dats, yes, I didn't update the artwork/etc dats yet...no time....guess they will follow in a week...
regarding MAME itself you of course don't need a dat....Profiler can take the MAME binary as datasource.

completing the new version won't happen too soon eiter...if you see me replying here, I usally answer by mobile phone....this coming week I won't be able to do any coding on the unicode stuff....so just be patient....

I not done anything yet with things but I have all the folders setup and I need a little advice on how to proceed (the method andy gave me is easy enough but things don't to be going well) My folder setup is as follows

c:\games\MAME (That is where my main MAME package is)

My updates are in the following folders:

c:\updates\0.141
c:\updates\0.142
c:\updates\0.143

All my mame and CHD updates for each specific version are in each spefific folder for that version. There probably is an easy way to get them all to update to the main fodler itself but the final connection I am struggling with

CHDs easy,
Move them all to one folder

ROMs load the ROMs DAT I provided.
Use the "Rebuilder" of CMP
Source c:\updates\0.141
Destination (your new main rom folder, maybe your old folder 0.140 renamed to 0.143)
Click "Rebuild"

then same for
source c:\updates\0.142
source c:\updates\0.143

I had no idea you had downloaded "updates"
I would have structured the guide slightly differently.
Forget the CHDs for now, just focus on the ROM set.

I made the guide to clean up the old set with renames, add possible missing rom files,
move older un-needed files out, then use that folder as download folder for a new 0.143 torrent to download on top of.

After hash checking,
It would have started at around 80% complete already.

EDIT:
I wrote that above as going to bed..
Instead of doing "Rebuilder" run 3 times..
You could just use
"Source"          c:\updates\
"Destination"    Your main rom folder.

Then with "Scan Subfolders" ticked,
it would pull the needed roms out in one go.
