clrmame Discussion / INI/CFG import file format?
« on: 11 November 2017, 10:12 »
Hello.  My apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but what is the text format of the ini/cfg file for importing paths in the Settings section?  I've tried a few formats but they didn't seem to work.  Thanks in advance.

clrmame Discussion / What to do with CHDs?
« on: 31 January 2012, 05:50 »
I've accumulated a rather large amount of uncategorized CHDs in a temporary download directory (712 files @ around 150 GB).  I'm not quite sure what to do with them, though.  Can CMP sort through CHDs and place them where they need to be in the roms directory?  I've tried running the rebuilder by pointing CMP to this temp directory, but nothing seems to happen.  Thanks in advance!

clrmame Discussion / Confused about when DAT files are needed.
« on: 18 January 2012, 02:15 »
This is (probably) going to be a painfully newbish question, but I've always wondered something.  If one is using the internal database inside the actual MAME executable when creating a profile, are external DAT files needed for anything?  If so, when and where?  I'm trying to get back into the MAME scene after an extended absence and am having to relearn a lot of details (many of which I never fully grasped to begin with).  Thanks in advance!

Okay, so you've amassed this huge collection of roms from various sources.  We're talking gigs and gigs of files.   You're very proud of your due diligence in keeping current with the mame scene.

And then - B A M - a new version of mame appears.  You think great, now some of my unplayable roms might now at least somewhat work.

But then it happens - a tremendous amount of VERSION-SPECIFIC roms start flooding the scene.  And you get a nasty surprise.  Roms that worked before (at least, to some degree), don't work now with the new mame executable.  You internally sigh, download the batch, and run something like cmpro.  It's a classical rinse and repeat.

My question is - why is this a necessity?  If a rom ran just fine 10 versions back, why would it suddenly stop running when the latest and greatest mame executable comes onto the scene.  Why are roms being altered in the first place?  Because they were incorrectly or incompletely dumped?  If that was the case, then I'd think they wouldn't run at all, no matter what version of mame is being used at the time.

Is a rom ever "perfected" to the point that it needs no further cmpro-type processing?  Can these 100% working roms be quarantined in some fashion?  Or is the scene plagued by roms upon roms upon roms that, for whatever reason, are broken or incomplete in some way.

This is something that's always mystified me.  I would think that, great, a new version of mame has come out.  And those roms which didn't work before (but do now) get posted.  I do NOT understand why these mega-floods happen, as I just can't believe each and every one of the previous rom versions were broken in some way.

Is there a "perfect" set of roms (and CHDs) that exist out there, somewhere?  Is that even possible given the current mame development cycle?

Sorry for being long-winded.  I also realize I asked a lot more than just one question.  Thanks in advance!

clrmame Discussion / Download folder - what's it do?
« on: 23 July 2010, 08:34 »
The more I use this program, the less I understand how it works.

First problem - I keep getting this message about cannot retrieve version information when switching between options.  But that's relatively minor.

The big thing I don't understand is what the download folder is suppose to do and how it's actually utilized.  I <ahem> download roms to a specified folder and have that folder defined in clrmamepro.  I thought that by running the scanner the program would take the updated roms from my download folder and somehow "merge/update" them into my main MAME roms folder.

However, that doesn't seem to be happening.  Or, if it is, I can't tell it's happening.

What do I have to do in order to get the updated roms into my MAME roms folder?  Will clrmamepro do it and I'm just not using the program correctly or is there some additional manual intervention I have to do at my end?

Oh, I don't know if this affects anything, but I've got my roms in my MAME roms directory separated out by systems.  Thanks in advance.
