Title: MAME roms on network share - performance is poor.
Post by: Sizzlechest on 25 February 2021, 17:59
I have my MAME roms on a Synology Diskstation. It's mapped to drive M: on my computer. CLRMAMEPRO is installed locally including the temp folder as verified in the cmpro.ini.

Scanning with fixing roms can take around 12 hours depending on the fixes involved. This last update (0.228 to 0.229) had a lot of roms that were missing a single file and that seemed to bog everything down. However, dropping the new files into the window to make the fixes was relatively quick.

I'm not saying this is a clrmame issue. There's something probably wrong on the network side, but I have no idea what to look for to fix it.

Turn off Scanner->Advanced->Deeper Check For Fixable Missing Files. (Normally this is disabled by default and why? because it is a real time killer)

Just to give you a number. On on a current PC with a local SSD a full MAME scan (no fixes) takes roughly 46 seconds.

Just my 2 cents
I too use a Synology nas to keep rom files and I rebuild/fix via network share all the time.
Of course is slower than a local drive but not so much, something like minutes not hours
The only time i had experienced something similar the guilty was a very cheap network switch between the pc and nas.
