clrmame Discussion / [developement idea] - multiple dat support
« on: 16 September 2010, 16:16 »
We often see in forums people speaking about the use of different versions of MAME to play. EG: standard 0.139 for normal use, wolfmame 0.106 for recording inp. I imagine that those persons are now keeping two complete separate sets, and have set different paths to do it. Wouldn’t it be useful to have cmpro handle more than one dat simultaneously, as “separate” or “fully merged”?

A developing idea might be
- Set one set as MAIN (eg 139.dat) and one as ALTERNATE (eg 0.106)
- Set the option to MERGE the two sets or to keep them separated, and set the relative folder/s
- Rebuilder/scanner should check that ALL ROM from the MAIN set are in the main ROM folder
- Regarding the ALTERNATE set, cmpro should IGNORE the COMMON roms (they are already in the MAIN) and put the alternate roms in the alternate folder OR into the main romset by appending a suffix to the rom name, eg, 0000lo.bin.106.  As MAME reads first the CRC32 from the ZIP heading to choose the rom to be loaded the presence of the suffix should not be a problem when loading the roms

This function should allow people to use multiple MAME versions keeping the number of roms to the minimum. It will be enough to set a double rompath (in case of split set), or to point both MAMEs to the same folder (if merged) and MAME will do the rest.
Can this be a good idea? :)

it is better if you don't. it's easier to look for a title with the search function of your browser than go looking with the wikipedia searcy engine. It might not be that user friendly as the page you linked, but it is easier for maintainance and editing. keep in mind that this is not a site for kids looking for games ;)

sorry for my wrong use of terms. As double rename I meant:

SetA (parent in old dat) -> SetB (clone in new dat)
SetB (clone in old dat -> SetA (parent in new dat)

sure, that is a risk, and that's why it should be an OPTION. It should be up to user to choose based on their will. Some want to be precise in everything, and for therm the "double rename" is the right way. For people just willing to see ANY image, or for collection of "parent only" like emumovie's AVI or Scuore's parent only, the "check if parent exist" it what they need!

hmm...actually I think you can't get this information from the 2 dats...

let's assume this switch of 2 sets:

SetA (parent in old dat) -> SetB (clone in new dat)
SetB (clone in old dat -> SetA (parent in new dat)

Your rule would allow both renames.....

If now the artwork123 datfile holds only SetA.png, apply the changes will make it to a SetB.png....which is a clone....this may result in the fact that only clone shows the picture....(hope this was clear...)
You got me wrong, my option included also the statement "but no new parent set is available". Maybe that point was not very clear and misleading, I'll try to better explain:

In MAME dats you have:
0.134->0.135
SetA->SetB, from parent to clone
SetB->SetC, from clone to parent, used C for clearer explanation, but could be B or whatever
SetD=SetD another clone, unchanged

In artwork123 you only have SetA
With the "double rename" rule, SetA.png is changed in SetB.png. If you load mameUI 0.135, the image is shown only in SetB, being now a clone properly renamed. This might be OK for sets like the title one, where very often each image refers to the exact version of the game being loaded

With the "check if parent exists", SetA would be renamed in SetC (parent). This because no SetB.png existed in artwork123 BEFORE the rename. Rebuilding with this dat would allow to see, in mameUI 0.135, images in all SetX. With the same option enabled, if in artwork123 both SetA and SetB existed, they would have BOTH renamed, accordingly to the mame dat.

Clearer now? Not easy but again, this is IMO the best option :)

the best thing IMHO would be a "if parent is moved to clone, but no new parent set is available, keep the old image as parent renaming it accordingly". In this way a parent image will always be available, even in not 100% correct

You must work it this way:

you need MAME dats for 0.129u3 and 0.135
You set MAME 0.129u3 as OLD DAT
you set MAME 0.135 as NEW DAT
you diff the two sets
You load the flyer dat as rename dat on the lower part of the page
you click on the "apply renames" or whatever (going by memory... :P )
You obtain a NEW flyer dat where the differences found between MAME dats 0.129u3 and 0.135 are applied

Tha's all folks ;)

The sets do differ...the u2 ones all had a bad dump listed (which influences the set hash).
However there was a little mistake in handling bad dumps which is now fixed.

Missed the "bad dump" thing, anyway, good it is settled :)

Now waiting for next beta... :D

...does it make sense to apply (besides setname) description/year/cloneof/romof/manufacturer from the new dat to the 3rd dat....

Mmmm I would make an option, OR check if these informations are already present in the 3rd dat and apply only if they are already there. EG, a dat made with dir2dat, like most of the snap ones are, have no such informations and they are not mandatory because in snap collection there is no actual dependency. So these informations will be redundant. In case of ROM/SAMPLE dats some of these infos ARE actually useful, so it should be important to report there too.

Here I am again, did you miss me??? :P

from 103u2 to 103u3:
Code: [Select]
*|sf2049se||double rename
*|sf2049te||double rename
*||sf2049se|replaced set
*||sf2049te|replaced set
These should be two "matched by unique set hash", set is composed by 1 rom + 1 chd and nothing changes from one version to the other, unless I overloocked something in the dats...

busy at work, that's the reason! :P

(only half true, I made some more, also making some redundancy checks with some of my scripts, and still nothing strange appeared :)
This is the tool I needed to rollback all the catlist, thanks man! :)

mmm sounds like people wanting to play everything with only MAME..... :P :P :P

Anyway:
Code: [Select]
*|glass|glass10|matched by unique set hash
*|glassa|glass10a|matched by unique set hash
*||glass|replaced set

:D :D :D
* s_bastian is happy :)

Now, let's go back hunting for more bugs, but I believe they will be very hard to find now.... :)

good to know it is not a bug but a "known feature".

No problem, I'll sort that out "my way" ;)
