I am maintaining a full reference set of roms/chds/samples. I want to create a much smaller subset for use on my cabinet, without affecting my reference set. Can I do this with ClrMamePro? How?
When I get an update my reference set, I'd like to update the cabinet set to as well. Is this possible with ClrMamePro? How?
Thank you for any assistance!

I found this link: https://www.aussiearcade.com/topic/50461-how-to-build-your-custom-arcade-roms-sets-with-clrmamepro/
I'm going through it now.

Ok, it "seems" rather straightforward, so I'll give it a try. If I have specific questions, I'll ask them.

OK... I tried the approach from the link I posted previously and it worked. However, it leaves me feeling uneasy. The fact that you have to load a custom file from the "Set Information" without a scan seems kludgy. Isn't there a cleaner way to do this with a custom DAT file?
For my test, I used only one rom set: mach3. I chose this one because it's one of the few in my cabinet that needs a CHD file. I couldn't figure out how to get the CHD to be brought into my destination folder automatically.
Any suggestions?

I only took a quick look at the page and I guess it selects sets and then does a rebuild. And I'd have proposed the same.
Assuming your collection is ok and on your cabinet you're using the same MAME binary as you're using to scan the collection in cmpro it's like this:
Scanner -> Scan Results -> Set Information, use "select sets" or "from file" or manual ticking the sets which you want (maybe also ticking incl. devices/bios/clone/parent checkboxes)
and then doing a rebuild in the rebuilder where the destination points to a new path (and not removing rebuilt files of course).

I assume this is still true?

the rebuilder only rebuilds roms

Ok. Thanks for your help! I can probably script the rest

There are many ways you can achieve what you want, each of which has its own peculiarities with relative pros and cons.
if I am allowed, I would kindly like to report you ARCADE DATABASE (http://adb.arcadeitalia.net/default.php?lang=en).
With this you'll have a lot of options to filter out the sets you want put in your cabinet, just use Search Filters and Export The Results. ;)
